Freedom to Forgive

story by Bethany Mollenkof

On Dec. 1, 1997, high school freshman Michael Carneal decided to open fire in the Heath High School lobby in West Paducah, Ky.

He chose to aim one of his bullets at Missy Jenkins and place her in a wheel chair for the rest of her life. But after the violence, Missy chose to forgive Carneal. She also chose to take her life back.

In the next decade, she graduated from college, became a counselor for troubled youth, got married, began having children and confronted Carneal face to face about his actions that tragic day.
